As for why the model was painted gold - unlike Bond's silver DB5 in the films - the story goes that Corgi's bosses were concerned that the silver-painted factory samples they'd seen looked too much like ‘base metal’. Any delay in production would have prevented the model from being in the shops in time for Christmas, so the decision was quickly made to paint it gold. The idea was that gold would make the DB5 more ‘special’ as a toy - a thought no doubt influenced by the previous year's Bond film, Goldfinger!
